Choosing a sofa may seem like a small thing. I mean it's just the piece of furniture we park our rear ends on at the end of a long day, right?

Not quite. Whether you realize it or not a good portion of our lives happens on our sofas. Movie night, pizza night, Monday night football, girls night in, guys night in, date night in, these are just a few of the activities our sofa makes possible.

So how do we choose the sofa that's going to be a comfy companion no matter how many hours we spend squashing its cushions?

Read on for a few tips.

Size Matters. When buying a sofa, make sure it's proportionate to the size of your room. In other words, if your living room is on the small side you might want to rethink that deep, overstuffed U-shaped sectional. Granted, you should purchase a sofa that's going to be comfortable and provide adequate seating, but it's also important to make sure you and your company can move around easily. In a smaller space, a nice love seat and a couple of accent chairs may be your best option. Before you go shopping, measure the room and take that with you. Don't forget to also measure your front door. It would be a shame to order the perfect sofa only to realize at delivery it's too big to fit inside. 🤦🏼‍♀️

Decide on a Style. Another good thing to do before you shop is to decide on the style of sofa you're going to purchase. This will help to narrow your options down, and keep you from getting overwhelmed. Take a look around the rest of your home, and find a sofa that compliments your existing furnishings and decor.

Upholstery. Polyester? Leather? Suede? Velvet? What type of upholstery do you want your sofa to have? Do you have children or pets? If so, go with a durable fabric that's going to be forgiving when stains inevitably happen. Companies like Sunbrella make beautiful outdoor fabrics that can now be used on indoor furniture to give it an extra layer of protection.

Budget. This is a biggie. Budget is personal, and I only bring it up because I always encourage my clients not to scrimp on important pieces like a sofa. It's going to get a lot of use, and hopefully be around for a long time. Quality is key. You can always save when it comes to accessories you can easily switch out, but a sofa is an investment. Buy wisely!
